| Abstract: | Straffa's (1926) article "The laws of return under competitive conditions" contains a devastating criticism of the Marshallian supply curve. This paper offers an interpretation of the article's opening passage on the "present position" of economics, which reveals a still broader criticism of Marshall's whole interpretation of the nature and history of economic theory. In settling the controversy in economics that marked the mid-19th century, marshall responded to the socialist, historicist and Jevonian critics by offering a novel interpretation of Ricardo. |
