| Abstract: | Even though Taiwan's economy should bounce back from its worst performance in five years, the hopes of the island's banks for a bullish Year of the Ox are mixed as competition intensifies with the rapid rise of direct financing options and faster market liberalisation. The side-effects of mainland China's intimidation campaign during Taiwan's first presidential election in March, sluggish exports, lagging private investment, serious delays in public works and depressed property markets pulled down overall economic growth and capital demand last year. |
