Abstract:There is much diverse discourse of both an academic and a more popular nature around the fashionable idea of globalization. Yet this is a contested concept. On the one hand, some argue that the nation state is being changed as power becomes more diffuse and borders increasingly porous. Technological change and free capital movements are reducing the domestic control of economies, and we are witnessing the homogenization of tastes and products and the spread of "best practice". On the other hand, there may be little that is new in globalization.
