Abstract:Twenty years of monthly production data for 11 manufacturing industries in 19 countries is studied. Cost structure of different industries is reviewed. The primary finding of the paper is that during a boom year summer shut-downs a shorter. Producers re-allocate activity from high output months to low output months instead of increasing production further during the rest of the year. Important cyclical or seasonal interactions common to all industries within a given country are also found. Country effects are found to be larger than the pure industry effects.
