Abstract: | In this paper the authors examine the results of interviews of scientists and executives in eight pharmaceutical companies on the issue of how best to organize the R&D function. They find that vertical integration of R&D is still the solution of choice for pharmaceutical firms. Given this result, firms must combat organizational failures in the R&D function by paying special attention to the concepts of focus, openness and incentives. They also discuss exceptions to the vertical integration rule for R&D. |
