Abstract:Studies recently investigating unit trusts have controlled either for a small firm effect or a fund size effect in the investment portfolio. This study contributes it's analysis to small firms effect whilst simultaneously controlling for the fund size effect. To the small firms effect the ethical unit trusts have significantly greater exposure than general unit trusts, and that net of this there is no significant evidence of over or under performance by ethical trusts using a Jensen measure. Fund size is not correlated with the financial performance of unit trusts, whilst a small firm effect has a role to play in explaining unit trust performance. There is also evidence that ethical unit trusts may not perform as well than general unit trusts.
