Abstract:To U.S. automakers Asia looks as a place to strike it rich. Executives are meeting government officials, meeting potential dealers, and scouting locations for parts depots and assembly plants. With everyone same thing in mind , some are bound to come out empty-handed. Actually Asia is dominated by Japanese and South Korean automakers. Each market has it's own obstacles. Fewer than 1.5 million vehicles were sold in Southeast Asia last year. Thailand is the most atractive, with some 560,000 sales in year 1996. Japanese manufacturers have been building cars in Thailand for two decades. The government keeps entry requirements simple and Thai wages are cheap. Job training is as critical for automakers as steel buying. Toyota has a training center outside Bangkok. For U.S. automakers the nature of the business will be tough.
