Abstract: | The real threat posed by the current energy crisis in the RFE is the extent to which the shortage of integrating factors such as money, power and communication can promote a "drifting away" of the region from the European core towards closer integration with Northeast Asia. The authors argue that there is, in the short and medium term, no alternative to a continuation of self-reliance and autonomous power generation, while, in the long term, the development of Sakhalin oil and gas could radically change the energy situation in the RFE. |
