Abstract:Outsourcing is one of the most important organizational concepts of the last decade. The aim of this article is to take stock and analyze the state of the art regarding empirical research on outsourcing. All in all 13 empirical studies regarding motives, design and success of outsourcing are analyzed. The results show that cost reduction is the most important motive for outsourcing. In addition, other important motives are the concentration on core competencies and the increase of organizational flexibility. The empirical results on the success or possible risk of outsourcing are equivocal. Future research should focus on these issues in a more theoretical context. In addition, more improved measures of success as well as comparative panel design studies are necessary.
