Abstract:In the first half of 2002, world economic growth picked up and the recession in the industrial countries gave way to a moderate expansion reflecting strong stimulus from monetary and fiscal policies, a return of confidence after the terrorist attacks in the US, and lower oil prices. However, while leading indicators until June pointed to a strong recovery of activity, economic sentiment since then has deteriorated again considerably, suggesting that the hangover from the boom of the late nineties will longer be felt than had been expected. The authors also state that the forecast assumes no significant adverse shocks that could result, for example, from a war with Iraq or a prolonged surge in oil prices and forecast a moderate expansion of the US economy (original in German).
