Abstract: | The principal objective in this exploratory article is to examine the financial problems of under- and over- investing in a longitudinal panel of 871 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Australian manufacturing sector. A novel research method for identifying sub-samples of potentially under-investing and over-investing SMEs is employed. Demographic and financial profiling reveals that under-investment is most likely to be evident in what are referred to in the SME research literature as life-style businesses. On the other hand, over-investment is most likely to be evident in what are referred to in the SME research literature as capped growth businesses. |
