Abstract:The paper reports on a research aiming to empirically test the basis for Back et al.'s (2000) premise that small deviations (hereafter as: devs.) from ethical behaviour (here as: eth-beh.) lead to even larger devs. from eth-beh. The study examines the association btw. a willingness to bribe a police officer to avoid being issued a speeding ticket and views on inappropriate beh. of corporate executives. The findings indicate significant differences btw. the views of participants from Canada, Ireland and Spain when compared with the ones from the United States (U.S.). The analysis indicates that in all four dilemmas (here as: dils.), the most significant variable was the belief about how ethical it was to pay a bribe to avoid a traffic ticket. In three of the four dils., Paulhus' Image Management Subscale, which measures social desirability response bias, was the second most significant variable. Finally, in all four dils., the students from Canada, Ireland and Spain thought the actions described in the dils. were less ethical than the students from the U.S.
