Abstract:This paper investigates whether resources could be more effectively utilized if they were targeted towards experienced entrepreneurs, rather than the provision of additional initiatives to increase the pool of inexperienced novice entrepreneurs. From a random sample of independent firms in Scotland 200 firms (56,5%) involved novice entrepreneurs and 66 firms (18,6%) serial entrepreneurs. The remaining 88 firms (24,9%) involved portfolio entrepreneurs, who are associated with experience and cognitiive mindsets that provide greater understanding surrounding why and how they own several businesses at the same time.
