Abstract:In the paper, the impact of managers' social capital (here as: soc-cap.) on managerial performance is examined. Two dimensions of soc-cap. are compared: the structural embeddedness (as: emd-ness.) of a manager's network of work relations (as: rels.) and the relational emd-ness. of those rels. Based on a sample of 120 product and sales managers in a Fortune 100 pharmaceutical firm, this paper presents evidence indicating that both elements of soc-cap. influence managerial performance, although in distinct ways: structural emd-ness. plays a stronger role in explaining more routine, execution-oriented tasks, whereas relational emd-ness. plays a stronger role in explaining new, innovation-oriented tasks.
