Abstract:By using structural role theory, the author examines the connections between the performance of organizational citizenship behaviour (OCB) and the individual’s involvement in social networks. OCB is described as behaviour connected to the occupation of position-role combinations in the organization’s informal structure. The OCB performance is proposed to occur alongside informal role performance in a certain network position, because this enactment is characteristic of position occupancy. One actor can adopt many positions in the network, and be in many ways connected to the informal organization. This places the actor in a position to perform OCB. The results of an empirical study including information about employees in a telecommunications firm show that cohesiveness, centrality and network links predict two different OCB types that are regarded as ‘good colleague’ and a ‘good employee’ role.
