Abstract: | Previous literature on joint ventures and other forms of alliances has named several positive motives underlying the decisions of firms to participate in this kind of cooperation. This article examines empirically if the difficulties brought about by the separation of control and ownership promote the development of joint venture portfolios of a firm. The authors focus on joint ventures and consider the debates about the agency theorys domain. Data was gathered among U.S. manufacturing firms, and it provides supporting results. Also comparable information about domestic and international joint ventures is found. Finally, the authors note, how agency hazards can generate extensions of firms nonequity alliance portfolios. |
