Abstract:This study develops an approach for analyzing the sustainability of competitive advantage emphasizing demand-side factors. The added-value approach is extended to business strategy by introducing how firms create value for consumers. Through this it is possible to characterize how consumer heterogeneity (here as: hetg-y.) and marginal utility on the demand side interact with resource hetg-y. and improving technologies on the supply side. Using this approach, a variety of questions are addressed, incl. whether technology substitutions will be permanent or transitory etc.
