Abstract: | To shed light on reasons for the continuing constriction of Russian civil space, the behaviour of the environmental movement (hereafter as: env-mvmt.) in a Russian (as: R.) region, the Samara Oblast, is observed through the lens of social capital. The R. env-mvmt. is illustrated to be inward looking and clannish, built on pre-existing friendships or elite connections, and uninterested in forming a mass movement, or actively engaging with the R. public. In addition, the majority of groups within the Samara env-mvmt. are themselves situated firmly in either half of the hourglass, spanning gaps btw. each other. However, there is no activity to bridge or reshape the constricted space btw. the halves. |
