Title:The commercialization of user innovations: the development of the rodeo kayak industry

Abstract:This study analyzes the commercialisation (hereafter as: comm.) process of user innovations (here as: u-innv/s.) in open communities, having traced 16 cases of u-innvs. having commercialized their own innvs. or having been involved in the comm. process to some extent. By developing and manufacturing (as: m-f.) new products, the u-innvs. of the study's sample created a fast-growing community (as: cmty). They used low-cost m-f. techniques being able to start a new industry before established manufacturers could enter the market. The transformation process from a u-innv. cmty. to a commercial and m-f. cmty. brought about a number of major changes which are tracked in this paper as: the motives for innv., the cmty. size and characteristics, the type of innv., the type of assistance and the disclosure of information, the form of communication, and competition btw. innovating users.
