Abstract:Altough the interest in codes of conduct (here as c.c.) has grown both within the academics and practitioners, there hasn't been much research into the actual compliance of suppliers in developing countries with the c.c. of multinational corporations (MNCs). This article contributes to it by examining Chinese suppliers' compliance with Swedish toy retailers' c.c. The study is based on unannounced and unofficial interviews with employees in Chinese suppliers, and its findings show that while all studied suppliers violate some of the standards, over two-thirds fail to comply with majority of the studied standards. The main explanation seems to be that the Chinese suppliers are successful in deceiving the toy retailers' monitoring organisations.
