Abstract:This article analyzes the relationship between new enterprise formation and regional employment change in The Netherlands using regional data from the period 1988-2002. The authors investigate the time lag-structure of the relationship, and whether the relationship is affected by the sector or by the degree of urbanization. The results indicate that the maximum effect on new firm formation on regional development is achieved after about 6 years, and that the overall employment effect is positive, but in The Netherlands the immediate effects could be small. In addition, the study suggests that the employment effect is strongest in manufacturing industries, and stronger in regions with higher degree of urbanization.
