Abstract:Some of the Spanish islands (e.g. the Balearics and the Canary Islands) have specialized in tourism, which has been one of the fastest-growing economic activities in recent decades. The authors investigated if this kind of orientation guarantees long-term growth. The Solow’s accounting model was used to measure the contribution of different production factors and of productivity to economic development. Tourism industry is the key to understanding the development in the case areas. Even so the decreasing contribution over time of productivity can have an influence on lower growth rates in the future.
