Abstract: | This paper aims to illustrate a critical approach to the study of popular culture artefacts, particularly in their portrayal of organizational and managerial relations and practices. The author argues for the utility of a dialectical approach to the interrogation of cultural artefacts, illustrating the approach through a textual analysis of several situation comedies in British television in the 1970s. The analysis shows that throughout this time it is possible to discern a cultural unease with the role and legitimacy of organizational management. The study is concluded with the implications of the findings and with the utility of adopting this theoretical orientation that attends to the ideological content and structure, and retains the possibility to pursue the critical and potentially utopian content. |
