Abstract:This paper suggests that fictional representations of professional service worker identities connect with scholarly representations in the Simpsons cartoon series. The article examines the ways in which the market-based behaviours of the show's 'expert' individuals are so repeatedly targeted for satire. The detailed analysis of The Simpsons' scripts show how, on the one hand, the show to a large degree reflects academic and critical thinking on the nature of the professional project, but on the other hand offers more ambivalent views of professional identity.
