Abstract: | This article develops and corroborates the latent aspect of institutional theory which institutional spectators observe and reproduce inter-organizational symbolism. To advance the grasp of institutional spectatorship, a study of the Canadian beer brewing industry is reported; the study shows how the symbolic self-presentations of breweries are reproduced by a central spectator: the news media. The results indicate that institutional spectatorship is an essential dramaturgical process that affects the structuration and stratification of organizational fields. |
