Abstract:Based on a longitudinal case study of the evolution of three network security software firms, it is found that the effects of managerial cognition can be found at three separate levels of capability development. At the level of operational capabilities, instrumental cognition have an impact on the way in which capabilities are developed. At the level of a firm's capability portfolio, changes in management's attention concerning capability development inflict different evolutionary paths to appear. At the extended firm level, managerial forethought affects the way in which a firm's capability constellation transforms over time.
