Abstract:Interest rate structures have been advantageous to smaller Turkish banks and foreign entrants, but economic conditions may offset this trend. From 1981 to 1986 smaller and foreign banks have the advantage over the large Turkish banks that they were new entrants, having no bad loans nor controlled interest rates. Now the economic prospects are worsening (the current account deficit is increasing), eliminating the earlier bonanza. The emerging shortage of foreign exchange among the smaller banks lead to the pegging of the exchange rate.
