Abstract:The world competitiveness of the United States industry could be lost by the end of the century,unless American top managers can learn to think and act in a radically different way in their everyday manufacturing decisions. The difference between an operational and a strategic perspective is still immense. Eight kind of manufacturing decisions: product design,process design,facility and plant configuration,information and control systems,human resources,research and development,suppliers' roles and relationships,and organization must be changed to achieve a strategic breakpoint.
