Abstract:Analyzing a sequence of innovations in which the present position of firms crucially affects their ability to benefit from future innovations,it is vital to distinguish between product and process innovations. Firms' responses are far more complex in the case of product innovation. When there is process innovation, intense one-period competition, typically leads to persistent dominance. With product innovation such competition can result in either persistent dominance or action-reaction. The former will occur if technical process is extremely slow.
