Abstract:The effects of cognitive categorization of raters on accuracy, leniency, and halo of performance evaluations were examined in field setting. 174 subordinates evaluated their managers' performance on 3 performance dimensions. Managers were categorized as congruent or incongruent based on subordinates perceptions. The results showed that the quality of ratings assigned by subordinates was related to the cognitive categories used.Ratings of managers categorized as congruent were more accurate, and contained more leniency, and halo tendency.
