Abstract:Israel's banks have experienced very difficult times, and despite urgent rescue operations the major banks are facing an identity crisis. The collapse of the price support system, through which the banks had pushed the prices of shares to high levels, lead a contraction in the banking activities. As a consequence, the directors of the big banks and the Governor of the Bank of Israel had to resign. The new leaders of the banks prefer profitability to size. As a result, the loans are extended to small investors and consumers. The main problem is that the public wants the government to break the power of the current owners without nationalizing the banks.
