Abstract:A firm's competencies embodied in its R and D workforce play a large part in determining its scope for developing its technological base. A methodology is provided by which a firm can make an inventory of its R and D competencies and their strengths and weaknesses. The identification of them proceeds in three steps: tracing the background of the current and past programs; constructing a programs/competencies matrix; deriving an expertise profile. The construction of the matrix is the key activity. A special procedure is sketched for constructing a suitable matrix. Some problems of implementation ara discussed. The benefits which can be gained by using this method are enumerated and analyzed.
