Abstract:Concessionaires are discussed as a strategic option for retailers. The history of the phenomenon in the UK and the US is outlined. Proprietary and secondary types are analyzed. Agreements between concessionaires and retailers are categorized. Systems of payment are examined. Advantages are highlighted. Examples are presented of concessionaires using retailers as a means of test-marketing a product before going on to establish their own chain of retail outlets. The case of Tesco is described, and Debenhams is analyzed as department store group. Concessionaire policy is outlined. Future developments in the US and the UK are summarized. Strategic implications are discussed.
