Abstract:The ability to assimilate foreign products, people and ideas is described as a strength of the United States. Japan's resistance to outside influence is analyzed as a source of cultural isolation. Trends and developments in Japan's economy and society are outlined. An end is forecasted for the country's arrogance and inaccessibility. Japan is taking steps to increase domestic demand, introduce market forces into Japanese agriculture, and protectionism. The domestic and the international economic policy of the US is criticized. The Japan-US relationships are examined. The future of trade agreements is outlined.
