Abstract:The development of computer-based management information systems (MISs) is appreciated. Beside its merits there are several ways in which a MIS may adversely affect managers' decisions. Their active searching/sense-making (enactment) is related to the experience which is not always in harmony with the logic of MIS. The actual role of the MIS is evaluated. MIS problem sources and side effects are identified: constrained data set, skewed data set, static data set. An awareness on the part of managers and designers of the potential problems and side-effects is the first line of defence against their occurrence. In conclusion, several recommendations for avoiding or coping with the problems discussed are offered.
