Abstract:Industrial tribunals as a success story of the British industrial relations system is regarded. Despite the results, controversy has emerged about the role and approach of the tribunals. The latest critique has been produced by the legal pressure group Justice. The Justice Report's analysis of the industrial tribunal system is reviewed. The procedure, jurisdiction and constitution of the tribunals are examined and three major deficiencies in their operation are identified. 1. Imbalance of knowledge and resources. 2. Piecemeal jurisdiction. 3. Deficiencies in constitution and expertise. Some reform dilemmas are formulated. Reform proposals are summarized.
