| Abstract: | The theory of manufacturing system control is extended by combining real-time material routing and scheduling decisions in a model of flexible manufacturing system that includes random machine failures for random lengths of time. The new element is the dealing with systems in which machines are not identical, but where different machines may perform some of the same operations. Different machines may therefore have overlapping capability, and different machines may take different lengths of time to perform the same operation. The problem is stated, and a dynamic programming solution is included. |
