Abstract:Employees' reactions to an experiment in concurrent social and technological change are analyzed at Basic Products. The firm manufactures components for material-handling equipment. It is located in a small midwestern city, and employs about 150 workers. Statistical analysis revealed that much of the reaction's variation could be explained by how the changes influenced the individual's job prospects. Then the benefits of various approaches to organizational change are discussed and the methods of executed changes at Basic are criticized.
