Abstract:After twenty years of spiraling agricultural use of chemicals growers and distributors are feeling the heat of consumer anxiety over poisoned produce. The environmental Protection Agency /EPA/ has required new testing on many old chemicals and is currently proposing new fees for registering new ones. The importance of consumers' active role is stressed, especially in case of ineffective signals from the agency. Daminozide, trade name Alar, is mentioned as an example. Alar is most often used on apples. The wholesalers and retailers who say their products are chemical-free cannot guarantee it. Consumers may no longer trust EPA assurances of chemical ceanliness. Entirely new testing procedures do exist and can meet the growing safety needs.
