INDUSTRIAL DEMOCRACY

Abstract:New rights for union members were suggested recently in relation to industrial action: a/ being able to apply to the High Court, b/ have the right to ignore a majority vote and not to be disciplined or expelled from the union. These and several other prorosals are considered in the light of Conservative government strategy towards industrial ralations. One of the last signals of the government point of view was published in the so called Green Paper (Trade Unions and Their Members). The content of this Green Paper is examined in detail. The government views on union democracy, deregulation, costs-benefit analysis of government intervention, and the wider context of corporate democracy are highlighted.
