Abstract:Motivated by the problems of circuit board manufacture, a problem is studied in which jobs, each consisting of items of two different types, are to be scheduled on a single machine. Fixed changeover delays occur when the machine completes an item of one type and prepares to start an item of the other type. An efficient algorithm is described and analyzed that computes a schedule to minimize the total job flow time of the products. The algorithm yields an improved solution to a batch-sizing problem. Applications to the automated manufacture of circuit boards are noted.
