Abstract:It is certainly true that pre-colonial Africa had nothing like European capitalism. Colonialism prevented the development of capitalism in a number of important ways. African leaders drew a number of conclusion from the colonial experience which unfortunately continued to hinder the development of capitalism. While the existing informal economic activity may allow people to survive and even prosper under adverse conditions, such activity still robs the economy of its strength. Unfortunately, rather than turning towards the free market, African economies have increased their reliance on state capitalism as the engine for development, particularly through the use of parastatals, entreprises owned and operated by the state.
