Abstract:The hypothesis is tested that the likelihood of becoming unemployed and the expected duration of unemployment for those joining the register have separate influences on the process of wage determination. Evidence on the determination of real product wages in Britain for the period 1967-1983 does not refute this hypothesis. In the preferred equation, both the likelihood of becoming unemployed and the unemployment rate are significant in restraining real wages, with the coefficient on the latter indicating the effect on wage bargaining of changes in the duration of unemployment conditional on job loss. The unemployed themselves are "outsiders" with no direct influence on wage determination.
