Abstract:While much has been written about the benefits of transfers to both organizations and employees, little research has been done on the human costs of corporate mobility. The findings from more than a decade of empirical research into these human costs are summarized. A range of substantive issues related to transfers are dealt with. Transferred employees and their spouses report how constant moving has hurt their financial security, their social lives, their familial and marital stability, and their psychological well-being. It is argued that any human resources management policies and programs must consider the human costs of transfers and mobility.
