Abstract:The use of humour as a tool for organizational diagnosis and change is in focus. Humour is a means for organization members to make statements about themselves, their relationships, their groups, and their organizations that may be more difficult to make and to hear in other ways. Examples from different sources are presented to explore how organization members use humour. Five primary functions that humour serves for individuals and groups are discussed. These functions are linked by a theoretical framework underlying the use of humour in the diagnostic process. Some thoughts are offered on using humour sparingly and carefully in the process of creating organizational change.
