Abstract: | In Vroom's (1964) formulation of expectancy theory the relationship between affect and perceived instrumentality was linear. Others have suggested non-linear functions. This paper contrasts the predicative power of two linear and four non-linear functions. Nearly forty percent of the subjects exhibited non-linear valence functions. The results highlight the importance of appropriate specification. |
