Abstract:The role of the chief technical officer (CTO) in orchestring the large manufacturing corporation's product, process, and information technologies is explored. The results of a survey of 25 CTOs from Fortune 100 industrial companies as well as telephone interviews with 22 of these 25 executives are reported. The following characteristics of a CTO's job are described and analyzed: 1.reporting relationships; 2. breadth of CTO authority; 3. tasks; 4. personal background; 5. motivation. A CTO can effectively contribute to the company's ability to derive competitive advantage from technology by facilitating the process of tapping opportunities and coordinating the efforts of the technology players.
