Abstract: | Allocating the various types of risk to those participants best able to manage them is the key ingredient that makes project finance so successful in large-project undertakings. The major risk components faced in each phase of a project are discussed. The many guarantees and undertakings necessary to cover these components are examined. The ongoing risks of interest rate and exchange rate exposure are assessed. The role of uncontrollable risks is emphasized. The case study of Eurotunnel demonstrates that project finance is a viable way to meet the staggering capital commitments required to launch major projects. The challenge for successful project finance is competent risk management, development of strategic alliances etc. |
