Abstract:In balanced, or synchronized, production lines, the typical of which are assembly lines, the output time-interval between consecutive products is uniform at all stages and this constitutes the line speed. Loss of production at any stage, due to machine breakdowns or defective items, stops the line. This results in low line efficiency. When production is interrupted by stochastic occurrences such as machine slowdowns, breakdowns or defective items, safety inventory is used. For transfer lines with many stages, where lost production can occur due to scrap or breakdowns, a model is developed to minimize the amount of total safety inventory at each stage to achieve a prespecified transfer line efficiency.
