Abstract:A model of pricing to market is developed where firm prices discriminate between export and domestic markets. The effects of depreciation and the influence of other factors on export is considered. It is investigated how the margin between export and domestic prices may be temporarily affected by unanticipated changes in exchange rates. An unanticipated depreciation will change price margins even in the absence of pricing to market. It is possible to distinguish between the temporary effects of exchange rate on pricing to market behaviour. Empirical evidence that export-domestic price margins in Japanese manufacturing are varied systematically in ways consistent with the theoretical model, is offered.
